What Will the Global Safety Syringe Market Look Like By 2020

September 22, 2016

Sales of safety syringes and specialist protective caps for medical needles are expected to increase significantly between now and 2019, according to a new report. The report was  carried out by Transparency Market Research (TMR) and states “the increasing number of needlestick injuries is the major factor driving the global safety syringes market.”1

Statistics from the World Health Organization show that around two million of the 35 million workers employed in the global healthcare industry are exposed to infection risk as the result of a needlestick each year. A sharps injury can expose the bloodstream to blood-borne pathogens associated with potentially life-threatening diseases including hepatitis C and malaria.

Many healthcare organisations around the world are strengthening their safety standards to prevent the spread of these conditions, meaning safety cap and syringe sales are set to soar over the next few years as a result.

In fact, TMR predicts that the global safety syringe market will be worth a total of $6.5 billion per year by the start of 2020, with non-retractable safety syringes accounting for the majority of this value. Meanwhile, North America looks set to remain the leading region for sharps safety devices across the globe, a trend it started in 2012 when the nation became one of the first to begin adopting advanced needle safety equipment and technology.

The report also looked at the importance of research, development and collaboration within the needle safety device market to boost the effectiveness and popularity of products, with automated retraction likely to be a key area of focus for the near future.

Additionally, more and more injectable drugs are coming to market, as scientists have determined that injecting certain drugs directly into a patient's bloodstream is one of the most effective ways to help treat and prevent illness. As a result, an increasing number of injections are being carried out, meaning more sharps safety devices are required, with experts hoping they become the new norm in just a few years' time, dramatically reducing needlestick injuries and the spread of blood-borne diseases.
