Continuing Education Course: Sharps Safety: Stabbing Issues and Cutting Trends

Course Overview:

This self-study program is designed to provide participants with current data on sharp injuries, ongoing issues and current trends since the advent of the federal needle stick safety and prevention act and the 2001 revised occupational safety and health administration bloodborne pathogen (BBP) standard. This program includes updated information related to healthcare environments exposure to BBP’s, injection practices and how the risks of sharps injury exposure can be avoided within a culture of safety. The focus will be on providing data and clinical practice perspectives to promote a culture of safety for the healthcare worker, patients and the environment they share.

Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Review the risk of sharps injury exposure to bloodborne pathogens (BBP)
  • Identify hindrances to creating a culture of safety
  • Discuss presented data relative to who, where and how sharps injuries occur
  • Examine the risk of noncompliance with current legislation
