CE: Ventilator Associated Pneumonia: A Clinical Approach to Prevention

Course Overview:
This self-study program is designed to provide the learner with an understanding of ventilator associated pneumonia, the second most common infection occurring in patients requiring mechanical ventilation for longer than 48 hours and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Because of this, there is great interest in accurately diagnosing, treating and preventing complications. This program will provide the learner with a general overview of VAP and a better understanding of the preventative principles associated with VAP.

Objectives:
After completing this course the participant will be able to:

  •  List the major risk factors associated with VAP.
  •  Identify three prevention principles related to reducing colonization.
  •  Describe three principles associated with reducing or preventing aspiration.

PROCESS FOR RECEIVING CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT

1 Go to Smiths Medical Online Training Portal www.smiths-medical-education.com and register for access
2 If you have previously registered on the Smiths Medical Online Portal for product training, enter your log-in details in the “Returning User” section. Once logged in, click on the "Add new course" button on the right side of the screen.
3 Enter the following registration code: SMCEALL (Note: This code will provide access to all of our continuing education courses)
4 First time users will be prompted to register and create a user name and password.
5 Once logged into the system, select “Ventilator Associated Pneumonia.” Read the course materials and instructions overview located at the top of the screen. The self-study and course overview are provided under the “documents” section.
6 Click on “Test”, left hand side of screen, then select “Take test” when completed click “Submit”. A score of 80% or greater is needed to pass. You may retake the test as many times as necessary to pass.
7 Select “Evaluation” left hand side of screen, then select “Take evaluation” and when completed click “Submit”. All users must successfully complete the activity including the post test and evaluation to view and print their Certificate of Completion.
8 Print or save certificate for your records.
