HEPA Filter Information

The current Coronavirus (aka COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is requiring containment to protect caregivers and their patients. Smiths Medical is receiving many requests for information on the use and performance of our HEPA filtration products.

Smiths Medical currently offers the following HEPA filters for use within anaesthesia, respiratory and critical care areas, indicated for use with patients receiving manual and/or mechanical ventilation by way of endotracheal or tracheostomy airways.

Smiths Medical has been informed by our supplier of these products that each of these HEPA filters has been tested, passing the Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) and Viral Filtration Efficiency (VFE) tests using Staphylococcus aureus and bacteriophage phiX174 (*Dimension about 0.025㎛).

Our supplier has informed us that the testing has demonstrated that these filters serve as a complete barrier to contaminated body fluids and have been validated to remove a range of clinically relevant bacteria and viruses, including, but not limited to:

  • Influenza A virus (H1N1: 0.08-0.12㎛),
  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis (1.0㎛)
  • Orthomyxovirus (0.12㎛),
  • Cytomegalovirus (0.1㎛),
  • Hepatitis C virus (0.8㎛),
  • Adenovirus (0.07㎛), and
  • HIV (0.08㎛)

Our supplier has not validated these HEPA filters for the removal of the COVID-19 virus. COVID-19 is a Coronavirus species and its size ranges from 0.06 to 0.2㎛.
