CADD®-Solis system now combines PCA and Programmed Intermittent Bolus (PIB) deliveries to labor analgesia and post-operative pain management

St. Paul, Minn., April 23, 2012 -- Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer, announced today it has launched the CADD®-Solis pain management system version 3.0 with Programmed Intermittent Bolus (PIB) delivery in countries outside the United States. The new customizable system will help healthcare providers overcome challenges in maintaining effective epidural analgesia for labor and delivery or post-operative pain management patients.

Epidural analgesia has traditionally been provided to patients by manual bolus injections from a clinician, continuous infusions from an IV bag or intermittent infusions controlled by the patient. These techniques may result in inconsistent and ineffective pain relief, as well as frequent clinician interventions. PIB medication delivery consists of programmed intermittent boluses that can be supplemented by patient-controlled doses. Clinical studies show that PIB medication delivery provides better distribution of medication in the epidural space that helps improve patient satisfaction, decrease drug use and reduce clinician interventions.

“The CADD®-Solis system version 3.0 with PIB combines intermittent boluses and patient-controlled doses in an integrated, innovative delivery solution,” said Tommy Johns, Vice President Global Product Management. “The PIB programming parameters and the delivery pressure performance provided by the CADD®-Solis system offer flexible drug delivery and reliable distribution of medication, which can help overcome some of the challenges associated with effective epidural analgesia.”

The CADD®-Solis ambulatory infusion system is a state-of-the-art pain management system that meets industry recognized standards for advanced error-reduction features in PCA pumps. The CADD®-Solis pump and CADD™-Solis medication safety software promote patient safety, patient care, and future scalable connectivity that is designed to grow with evolving clinical and technology needs.
