How does your work support the company's mission?

I currently lead a team that is developing a next generation product platform in one of our key business units. It directly ties to our strategy of bringing new and innovative products to market - driving improvements for patients, clinicians, and commercial success for the company. New products are the growth engine of any healthy medical device company, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Can you share more about your career path at Smiths Medical?

I started as a Program Manager in Global Operations. It was a great initiation into to the organization as I was able to leverage my background in quality and manufacturing to lead operations-focused projects, including some focused on supply chain optimization and expanding production lines. After a few years, I shifted into a role leading early stage teams focused on voice of customer and scoping out new potential products – my first introduction into new product development at Smiths. Since then, I’ve been able to progressively build my skillset and scope of responsibility to lead much larger, more complex and impactful product development initiatives, while progressing to a Senior Program Manager role and most recently, Program Director.

Describe a typical day in your position.

What I really love about program management is that there is no such thing as a “typical day.” I spend a lot of time communicating and driving decisions with all levels and functions within the organization, including R&D, Operations, Global Quality and Regulatory, Finance, and many others. Early in a project, my time is spent working with the team to develop customer and product requirements, as well as a general project plan. From there, my days shift into coordinating cross-functional efforts, preparing schedules and budgets, negotiating development agreements, and transferring products into manufacturing.

How has your department evolved since your first joined Smiths Medical?

Over the last several years, we have had a strong focus on improving our execution and becoming more disciplined about decision making. I’m proud that we have made some significant progress in improving our systems, people, and processes surrounding product development. We’re starting to see the fruits of our labor in terms of program predictability and an improving cadence of new product launches.

What do you love working at Smiths Medical?

I enjoy the opportunity to bring new medical devices to our patients and customers around the globe. Smiths Medical has a nice balance - it is large enough to offer a variety of opportunities, but small enough that individual contributions are recognized and make a difference.
