2020 Interns

The Summer Internship Program at Smiths Medical gives students the opportunity to contribute to real projects that directly impact the company. Students work alongside and learn from individuals at all levels of the organization. Throughout the summer, the interns work directly with Smiths Medical products and gain extensive experience in their related field. We look forward to having the interns onsite each summer as they bring a great energy to the office.

What does it mean to have this internship opportunity when many events and opportunities have been impacted by the global pandemic?

It means so much to me to still have this opportunity

Dannyelle Donahue

Systems Verification Intern

“It means so much to me to still have this opportunity in a year where so many things have been cancelled. It gives me hope for the future that we will overcome the pandemic. There will always be a need for medical devices and engineers. This internship is going to challenge me to develop as a professional engineer—an experience one cannot find in an academic setting. I’m infinitely grateful to have the privilege to contribute to a field that has a direct impact on helping those affected by COVID-19. This experience cannot be replaced, and I am very grateful to have the opportunity for hands- on learning offered by Smiths Medical.”

It was a relief to know that I would be to get a collaborative, fruitful, learning experience this summer!

Anna Karos

Systems Intern
“I could not be more grateful to Smiths Medical for not only prioritizing having us as interns this summer, but also making it possible for us to be in the office! This experience would not be the same without the in-person collaboration and ability to be hands- on with the devices that we are working on. With a lot of uncertainty everywhere about what is coming in the future, it was a relief to know that I would be working and that I would be able to still get a collaborative, fruitful, learning experience this summer!”

Designing devices, and fixtures that will have an impact people’s lives

Katelyn Ramthun

Production Line Engineering Intern
“I chose medical device because it’s not designing a product that everyone is going to use every day, it’s designing devices, and fixtures that will have an impact people’s lives. At Smiths Medical, in particular, you are working on projects, and designing devices that have a true impact on thousands of people around the world. As an intern you are assigned projects that allow you to go down to the lab and perform testing, write code for devices, or even design specific components of a device. The work you do is real life work that not only benefits the company but also helps you grow as a student.”

In the medical device industry, however, innovation is driven by the mission to save lives

Emily Reynolds

NPI - Mechanical Intern

“Sometimes, engineering can seem impersonal, which can also make it seem intimidating. In the medical device industry, however, innovation is driven by the mission to save lives. This has made engineering feel both more meaningful and more exciting. At Smiths Medical, I have been further inspired to spend my career engineering new ways to give people their longest and healthiest lives!”

One of the best things about the medical device industry is that it is so personal.

Peyton Trauth

NPI - Mechanical Intern
“One of the best things about the medical device industry is that it is so personal. Medical devices impact the lives of so many people around us and knowing that my work could potentially impact someone’s life or improve one’s quality of life is what motivates me. Smiths Medical was particularly interesting to me because of their medium size; I really wanted the business culture and personal connections of a small company with the resources and abilities of a large company – so I think Smiths Medical is the best of both worlds.”

The most valuable experience I could have with a summer internship would be to learn more about what Minnesota is best at.

Rian Noble

Sustaining Engineering - Electrical Intern

“Minnesota is known for being a world leader in the Medical Device industry. Being that I am from here, and there is a good chance that I’ll want to live here after graduating, I decided that the most valuable experience that I could have with a summer internship would be to learn more about what Minnesota is best at. I chose Smiths Medical specifically because of its company size. The last company I interned for had roughly 400 employees, so being able to compare that mid-size to a large- sized company is very valuable to me.”

The products that Smiths Medical specifically makes are very important to thousands of patients every day

Chris Kelley

Systems Packaging Intern
“I had previous experience working in the packaging industry, but working at Smiths Medical last year was a great opportunity to learn about the responsibilities of a packaging engineer in the R&D department at a medical device manufacturing company. The products that Smiths Medical specifically makes are very important to thousands of patients every day. So, I know that the work that I have done and will do for the packaging team here at Smiths Medical has a legitimate impact on people’s lives and that feels good to make a difference in the world.”
