The first part of my career was spent as a senior staff nurse on a busy acute surgical ward, following that I took a completely different direction and specialised in Coronary Care Nursing which I have always had a great interest in. I remained on CCU until I decided to move into industry, my first role was with the ATLAS Team, a training team sponsored by an educational grant from Roche. During my time with this training team we developed and delivered a pre-hospital thrombolysis training programme to assist the ambulance services to meet the targets set out in the NSF. I have also provided training for Apex, a nursing agency this included Basic Care courses, moving and handling and basic life support. Following that I spent a short time as a nurse advisor providing cholesterol and hypertension audits in the primary care setting. But for the last six years I have mainly been involved with education and training which I enjoy immensely. I still train Paramedics and currently along side my present role still teach pre-hospital thrombolysis to some of the ambulance services in the north of England.

  • A large proportion of my career has been within the critical care environment.  Here I gained invaluable experience caring for acutely ill patients and patients with multiple injuries.
  • My dissertation was on the effect of pain relief.  Two groups were looked at.  The first group had pre-operative information the second group did not.  These groups were then compared to see if the effects of pre-operative information affected the way the patient responded to analgesia.
  • I have also had an interest in teaching and spent a year seconded to Nottingham Universities School of Nursing teaching pre-registration students.
  • The latter part of my career has been in primary care.  Within primary care I have held first line manager posts and latterly been an Education and Development Specialist Nurse.  This post not only involved training nurses but also had an input into performance management.
