UniPerc™ Kit Wins Design Award
Thursday, 8 Apr, 2010
Smiths Medical, a leading global medical device manufacturer, today announced that its Portex® UniPerc™ Percutaneous Tracheostomy Kit has received a 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award, presented by the publishers of Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine.
The Portex® UniPerc™ Percutaneous Tracheostomy Kit is the first dedicated percutaneous tracheostomy option with tubes specifically designed for patients with larger necks.
The Medical Design Excellence Awards competition (www.MDEAwards.com) is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of:
- Design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials
- User-related functions that improve healthcare delivery, or change traditional medical attitudes or practices
- Features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient
- The ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.
A comprehensive review of the entries was performed by an impartial multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine and diagnostics.
All Portex® UniPerc™ products and their components have been designed to make percutaneous insertions into large necks quick, safe and effective. Percutaneous refers to a medical procedure where access to inner organs or other tissue is done through the skin. The UniPerc™ range is particularly suitable for patients who have large, muscular, bull or obese necks. People with larger necks pose unique challenges for healthcare providers. Proprietary features of the UniPerc™ range - including its unique dilation kit - allows the tracheostomy tube to be used where standard tubes are inappropriate.
“Being selected for this prestigious award validates the work of our R&D teams, who have worked hard to bring the UniPerc™ range to an under-served group of patients,” said Srini Seshadri, President of Smiths Medical. “The unique design of these tracheostomy tubes addresses a specific unmet medical need, while also helping healthcare professionals improve their technique and increase patient comfort.”
The 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award winners will be honored at a presentation ceremony on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, in New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, where the gold and silver award recipients will be announced.
