Ventilator Associated Pneumonia: A Clinical Approach to Prevention.

This self-study program is designed to provide the learner with an understanding of ventilator associated pneumonia, the second most common infection occurring in patients requiring mechanical ventilation for longer than 48 hours and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Because of this, there is great interest in accurately diagnosing, treating and preventing complications. This program will provide the learner with a general overview of VAP and a better understanding of the preventative principles associated with VAP.

Successful completion of this activity awards 1 contact hour of Continuing Nursing Education credit or 1 contact hour of Respiratory CRCE credit.

Capnography

This self-study program is designed to provide an introduction to the use of capnography, the measurement of end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2), as an integral tool to assist the clinician with in-depth patient assessment. ETCO2 monitoring provides a breath-by-breath assessment of the adequacy of ventilation and circulation. The human physiology involved in monitoring capnography, the relationship between exhaled and arterial carbon dioxide, and the interpretations of values and waveforms will be presented along with the various clinical applications for capnography.

Successful completion of this activity awards 1 contact hour of Respiratory CRCE credit only.

Evaluating the Risks of Bloodborne Pathogens

This self-study program is designed to provide the learner with an understanding of the epidemiology of needlestick injuries (NSIs) and the transmission of bloodborne pathogen (BBP) infections. Percutaneous injuries continue to be a major concern in the healthcare environment where employees are exposed to BBPs. Needlestick injuries resulting in exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials pose a serious risk to healthcare workers. This program examines the risks and discusses the treatment in the event of a BBP exposure.

Successful completion of this activity awards 1 contact hour of Continuing Nursing Education credit or 1 contact hour of Respiratory CRCE credit.
